Footloose Workshop - February 26

Purchase the Footloose Workshop-on-the-Go kit and join our crafting group for personalized instruction to make two double layouts featuring the new Seaside wooden shapes, coordinating dimensional elements (themed chipboard), and learn various techniques to use on your layouts.

Workshop kits must be purchased before February 20 to ensure that they arrive before the scheduled workshop date. Workshop begins promptly at 10 a.m. at my house.

Workshop kits contain 6 sheets of background and texture (double-sided) paper, 6 sheets of coordinating card stock, and 2 sheets of neutral card stock. The kit also contains an exclusive stamp set (only available in the kit), and the embellishments mentioned above. I guide everyone through designing the pages, but you're free to change it up based on your preferences. A full-color instruction guide is also included, and you'll have lots of supplies left over for additional projects.

Stella Cards

I made these 3 cards from one 6x6 kraft card base. Pretty cool, eh? I lifted the idea from another CTMH consultant, Jen Rubio, who lifted it from someone else.

These cards were from the Stella WOTG kit bonus project. There were more, but these are the two that I chose to do. Notice that the scalloped border (card on the right) is created by stamping the top portion of the chair. Cool trick.

Adorable

Here is a simple card I made with the new "Adore" stamp set. I also used "Eclectic Edges" to border the card, and the NEW, AMAZING color-ready ribbon. You can die this ribbon the exact color you want by dragging it across the edge of your ink pad, or using a dauber to blot the color on. It is the coolest!! I think I'm going to have to order cases of this! LOL! I added just a few pearl opaques to the flowers in the heart (because I love bling).

"Stella" Projects

Rock the Block Cards

I'm loving the new Rock the Block stamp set! I made some monochromatic cards, and I really like how they turned out. The colors are Twilight, Tulip, and Outdoor Denim (although it looks dark grey or black in the photo). I added sparkles and colored gems to bling it up a little, too. The stamp sets used for the sentiments are: Friendship Bouquet, Remarkable Wreath, and Friendship.

Cricut Art Philosophy (AP) Cartridge

Have you tried Prisma Glitter? It's incredible! Below, I cut out the ornament shapes with the new Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge, then stamped them in different colors. Then, I ran them through my Xyron machine (upside down, so the sticky side would be on top), and sprinkled Prisma Glitter on them.

I love how they turned out. I'll be using them as gift tags for my hostesses (I wrote on the back of each one).

Easy Christmas Cards (no, really!)

Last night, armed with 2 sheets of CTMH paper and some matching stick ease, I created these 8 cards - so easy! I'd say, after I set out the supplies, it only took me about 30 minutes (with family interruptions). I think they turned out kind of cute! I also used a punch for the snowflakes, and a few bitty sparkles. Still - WAY cheaper than buying cards, and so much more meaningful! Click to enlarge.

Remarkable Wreath

I made this card with scraps from the Dreamin' paper pack and the Remarkable Wreath stamp set. The twigs are stamped in Desert Sand ink, overlaid with Goldrush. The bow is stamped in Chocolate, with a mocha pearl gem in the center. The sentiment is from another stamp set and is also stamped in Chocolate ink. I also used a stylist dipped into the new copper glitter gel to highlight "berries" on the wreath. I cut out the notecard shapes with the new CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge. Click to enlarge.

Flower Pot

At Sunday's workshop, we made this adorable flower pot cards using the "A Posey" stamp set. Super easy! The flowers lift up to expose a tab for your message. I scrap lifted the idea from Lisa Stenz.

By the way, the flowers were cut from the new CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge, which made this even easier! The stamp aligns perfectly within the cut image.

Mischief

Sonoma Workshop Kit

For the past couple nights, I've been making layouts and cards from the Sonoma workshop-on-the go kit. The kit includes:

A level 2 paper pack PLUS a couple sheets of neutral card stock (colonial white)
An exclusive stamp set, only available in the kit
A sponge for daubing ink onto your paper
A medley of pewter embellishments
A full-color instruction guide

I completed the two double layouts (without pictures for now) and got started on the bonus project: five 6x6 scalloped cards. I have so much stuff left over, I can easily get 10 cards out of it. That's convenient, because the card/envelope pack includes 10 cards. As usual, I strayed from the instructions a bit (I don't have the patience to cut things out, so I used my Cricut for the flowers on the cards), and I decorated the inside of some of the cards too. Most people "nest" when the days get shorter. Me? I hoard supplies for the winter! ha ha!

With CTMH's new, lower prices (from $4-5 off all stamp sets) and fabulous new products, it's a great time to stock up and schedule some girl-time to start/work on/finish those projects! Besides, if you don't do it, who will?

I hear all the time, "I just don't have time." Well, make time! My hostesses enjoy a day a month away from "Honey this", and "Mom that" to visit with friends, scrap lift ideas, learn new techniques, and get to done on those projects. We plan a month ahead for special occasions (i.e., make Halloween cards in September, Christmas cards in November, etc.), so you're always in good shape!

Dreamin'

Yesterday I received my first shipment of new products, and I'm stunned - they look even better in person than they do in the catalog. I've already put together 4 double-layouts using the new Dreamin' workshop kit. I still have supplies left over, so I'll probably work on the bonus projects later this week. I'm going to need a third job so I can buy more stuff!!

The pictures aren't too clear (operator error, I'm sure), but you get the idea! This paper is great for fall pictures. Fall is my favorite time of year. Click images to enlarge.

Camping layouts

I just finished these two layouts - one using Lucky and one with Backwoods paper.

Started out color-blocking, but veered off course!

Too much empty space, but couldn't figure out what to add.

Then I finished this one. I used a "lace" stamp to go over the title letters to make them look more textured. I also added bronze foundry corners to the larger pictures.

Sunday's workshop

At our workshop yesterday, I tried something new (for me). I made colored copies of the projects we'd be working on with detailed instructions for each attendee. This worked surprisingly well because everyone got to work at their own pace, and viola! many of them, who don't usually finish, left with completed projects, as well as instructions for completing the rest at home. I think I'll keep doing this (and, of course, I'm still available to help those who want my assistance). And, BONUS, I got to work on MY projects! :)

Below is a page my friend, Kadi, created using the Miracle papers. She did a beautiful job on the lettering, and the Chihuly pictures look great! She also used the kraft adhesive borders and added dimention to her title blocks by inking the edges. The companion page was just as lovely, but I forgot to get a picture of it before she left.

I love this paper pack! It works for spring, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day - and since it's a bit floral it works for girls, but the colors go great for boys too! My lighting wasn't very good -in person these are much brighter.

Heartfelt Treasures Card

I love this card - so simple to make - using the Heartfelt Treasures stamp set. I think I'll make "sets" of them to keep on hand. The top fold tucks under the flower, which is adhered to the bottom half of the card. The envelope is stamped to match.

More Lucky Layouts

Here's another layout I made using the new Lucky paper pack. The fish (between the two tags) is covered with liquid glass to make it shiny, and the photo mats are distressed (like me!).

Here's a card I scraplifted from someone else. It would be cute as a Father's Day card or male birthday, or (if done in black and white, minus the pockets) as a prom/engagement-type card.

Sophia Card and Layout

Late, late, late last night, I decided to come up with a new card layout for my next hostess workshop (see below). Other than the fact that I stamped the sentiment crookedly, I like how it turned out! The top image doesn't show it too well, but the folded part lies flat against the back of the card (or is supposed to!).

Of course, the envelope is decorated with the same images around the edges.

My friend, Suzanne Slupesky (original owner of CA Stampin' in Pleasanton), is the new buyer/manager for Richard's Arts & Crafts in Livermore. YEAH!!! Expo Make & Takes

Below is the Lucky layout I'll be featuring at the Pleasanton Scrapbook Expo this Friday and Saturday. There is a companion page that goes with it, but I'll post that later (it uses the remaining pieces cut for this layout).

Adhere print paper to left side of cream card stock.
Adhere blue strip 3" up from bottom of page.
Adhere kraft adhesive border on top of blue strip.
Adhere olive rectangle (offset to right) as desired (use for journaling).
Using daubers, ink small and large squares with Desert Sand ink.
Stamp large "corner shadow" image on opposite corners of 2 of the large squares (stamp C1439 Enjoy Life).
Stamp small corner images in Desert Sand (stamp B1366 Lucky WOTG).
Stamp clock on small cream card stock square and cut out (stamp C1439).
Adhere the small 4 squares on the center large square.
Adhere clock to center of small squares with a foam square or pop-up dot. (Make sure the clock is oriented with the Roman numeral (XII) at the top). If you have liquid glass, you could cover the clock face with it (let it dry) before adhering to the layout.

COMPANION PAGE

This page was made using the leftover print strip from the above layout.

Stamp flourish design on Olive card stock in Outdoor Denim.
Add blue dot strip about 3" from top of page.
Thread wooden button with bamboo waxy flax, leaving long ends (loop around a pencil to get the swirls, then press down to lightly adhere to paper.
Punch circles from Sunset and Olive card stock and stamp with small dotted circle stamp (Enjoy Life) in Desert Sand as desired.
Use a plate or template to evenly space the circles and adhere.
Add threaded wooden buttons as desired.
Stamp corners of Kraft or Desert Sand card stock mat (5.5x7.5) with Enjoy Life corner image in Desert Sand. Add 5x7 photo and adhere to layout.

Expo Make & Takes

Below is the make & take card I'll be featuring at the Scrapbook Expo this weekend (instructions below).

Stamp "LIVE LIFE" (B1366 Lucky WOTG stamp) on cream cardstock (landscape direction) in Outdoor Denim.
Daub edges of card stock with Desert Sand ink and adhere to Outdoor Denim card stock. Set aside.
Adhere argyle patterned paper to top edge of card base.
Adhere print strip 1" over from card seam and flush with top.
Stamp flourish (C1439 Enjoy Life stamp) in Outdoor Denim over half of print strip and onto argyle paper.
Stamp corner image in Desert Sand ink, but daub corner with Outdoor Denim ink first.
Adhere kraft adhesive border under argyle paper.
Thread button with Bamboo Waxy flax and adhere to card with glue dot.
Adhere LIVE LIFE box as desired.

Viola! Remember to stamp a sentiment on the inside of the card, and a matching image on your envelope to tie it all together.

Cards from scraps

I was on a mission to make cards out of scraps from recent workshop kits, and here are the results.

From the Miracle kit:

Size A2 card base in Colonial White. Cut 2x2 squares from Colonial White and 2 patterns from Miracle. Cut 1x4.25 strip of Sweet Leaf. Stamp images from One of a Kind and Wonderful stamp sets in Crystal Blue and Sweet Leaf. Add pearl opaques and Sweet Leaf ribbon. Ink edges of card base with Crystal Blue.

From the Lucky kit:

Size A2 card base in Outdoor Denim. Used faux suede technique on Kraft card stock. Add green diamond strip at left. Used star border punch at bottom (reserve stars). Stamp images in Cocoa with Enjoy Life stamp set. Stamp swirl design (behind bike) in Bamboo (Little Princess stamp set) and adhere stars as desired. Added Olive card stock under border to show off stars.

From the Sophia kit:

Size A2 card base in Tulip. Cut four 1.75x1.75 squares in white card stock. Cut 1 3/8 squares out of patterned (Sophia) papers and adhere to white squares. Ink edges in Tulip. Adhere squares to Sweet Leaf card stock, then mount on white mat. Cut banner shape and stamp sentiment in Tulip ink. Use foam squares to adhere, then mount on Tulip card base. Thread button with white waxy flax and twirl excess and pat down (it will stick to paper).

Making paper roses

I shamelessly lifted these images from someone else's blog (because I'm too lazy to take my own), but I am changing the directions slightly based on how I teach this at my workshops.

Step 1:
Start with a 4 x 4 piece of paper (adjust to the size rose you want to make). Using scalloped scissors, cut into a circle, then cut a spiral toward the center. TIP: You'll want the outside spiral to be a bit more narrow than the inside, so more of the petals will show. The skinnier your spirals, the more low profile your roses will be.

At this point, use an ink dauber (CTMH item Z726) to sponge the ink color of your choice on the outside edge of the spirals, all the way to the middle (not pictured). This will give the rose more dimension.

Step 2:

Beginning at the outside edge of the spiral, start rolling inward. I found that this is easiest if you have a small round finishing file (CTMH item Z1091) because it "grabs" the paper. In this photo, the demonstrator is using a skewer (she said it didn't work well).

Step 3:

Once your rose is rolled up, use a hot glue gun to put a dollop of glue between the rolled up rose and the "base". Hold it in place for a few seconds (maybe 20) allowing it to unroll slightly for the look you want.

Step 4:

Using your finishing files, gently roll the petals backwards for more dimension.

Step 6:

Make your own Glimmer Mist. Using a fine mist spray pen (CTMH item Z1380) fill with water to the 4th line from the top. Add 1-4 drops of re-inker dye in the same (or complimenting) color as the ink you daubed on the edges of your rose. Typically, this would be the same or LIGHTER color. Then add two pea-sized drops of pearl paint (CTMH item Z1039) to the spray pen (consistency of toothpaste). Shake, shake, shake! The pearl paint takes a while to break down, so keep shaking!

Step 7:

Cover your work area with paper towels or use a box lid to capture "overspray" and spray your roses as desired. I usually spray 4 at a time (that will use up all of the Glimmer Mist in your spray pen). Be sure to catch the outside layers of the roses. I usually start with the roses upside down so I can give them a quick coat, then I flick them over to spray with the remaining mist.

Viola! Let roses dry and use to embellish cards, gifts, and containers of all sorts!

Make your own carnations

Here are some pictures of easy "button" carnations we made at our last workshop. So easy! The white ones were made using a different technique - video tutorial below.

Instructions:

Using a scallop punch, punch 6 rounds.
Pierce or punch a small hole in the center of each round.
Daub the edges (front and back) in desired color.
Set one aside (this will become the base).
Cover your work area with paper towels or use a box lid to capture overspray.
Spray the 5 rounds, front and back, with a fine mist spray pen filled with water.
Crumble up each round into a tiny little ball - there is no wrong way to do this. Let sit for a minute. Gently unfold each little ball, but don't flatten out all the way.
Using a brad, thread each of the rounds onto the brad, and end with the base.
Scrunch up each layer (toward the top/center) and hold for a moment.
GENTLY pull apart and shape as desired.

When the petals completely dry, they will become hard and "set". You can use colored paper, larger scalloped punches, and decorative brads (as shown above with the red carnation).

Scrap and Stamp Camp this Sunday

This Sunday, February 20, from 10-4 I'm hosting a scrap/stamp camp at my house.

Cost is $10 for the day, and includes a few make-n-takes and use of all my tools (stamps, inks, punches, Cricut, etc.). I'll also be showing you how to make 3-D carnations and roses. So, bring your new and unfinished projects and enjoy a day without “mom can you…” and “honey will you…”! Double the fun and bring a friend! Prizes for the best layout and best card created at the camp.

Please RSVP by noon on Friday, February 18th - space is limited to the first 10 people so everyone will have plenty of room and so I can prep materials. Beverages provided, but bring your own snack/lunch.

Hostess Workshop - Wings

So last Monday, I held a hostess workshop at my house. My dear husband indulged me by setting up 4 new scrap tables in the living room (yes, he had to move out the furniture!). Had a great time and scheduled workshops for the next several months - can't wait!

Step 1: Getting Started

Determine your idea of a scrapbook - A scrapbook is simply a place to preserve photos, memorabilia, and thoughts; it doesn’t have to be a work of art. Make your layout “speak for itself” so it can be treasured for generations to come.
Don’t be neurotic - It’s not realistic to think that you need to use EVERY photo you take; just capture the moment. And don’t be afraid to crop (cut) out the distractions from your photos before using them. If there's a gorgeous bikini-clad woman behind your adorable toddler at the beach, for heaven’s sake, cut her out of the picture! (That's not neurotic, it's good planning!)
Start small - You may want to consider grabbing a small (8x8) scrapbook to get your feet wet. With this size, you slap on one 4x6 photo per page, and you have just enough space for a little journaling and a few embellishments. These can be completed quickly (great for one-time events, such as an anniversary or graduation party), and you don’t need a degree in artistic design.
Focus on people and relationships - Yes, you can do entire scrapbooks on your spoon collection or your cat, but the most interesting scrapbooks are about people and your relationships with them. The people we love are what matter most. Your pictures don’t have to be about big events – remember to capture the everyday moments too (people working, laughing, cooking – just being themselves) – that’s what you want to treasure. And don’t forget to include pictures of yourself! Scrappers are notorious for being the ones who TAKE the pictures, but they are seldom IN any of them.
Scraplift! - Scrappers are very social creatures, even those who prefer to scrapbook alone. The easiest way to find inspiration is to find friends and neighbors who enjoy scrapping – whether in local scrapbook stores, classes, or on-line. Every scrapper I know is more than willing to help out a newcomer! Also, there are a plethora of on-line galleries to help jump-start your creativity. Check out a few blogs, which always have links to other blogs, and bookmark the ones that fit your style.

Step 2: Creating your layout (LO)

Pictures - Choose only your best photos. Don’t pick the ones that are unflattering or have distractions in the background (like a tree growing out of the top of someone's head). Remember, you don’t have to use EVERY photo you take, just the ones that best capture the moment.
Theme – What is the “story” you want your LO to tell or subject you want to showcase? What title will you use? Your LO can be an event, a holiday, a baby milestone, vacation – anything!
Colors – Choose 1-3 colors. Look at your pictures and see if there’s an accent color that you can match (say, the color of something in the background or the color of the bow in a little girl’s hair). You can go with a monochromatic theme using solid or patterned papers, or you can pick a variety of complementing hues.
Embellishments – Select a few embellishments to accent your page, such as stickers, chipboard, ribbon, borders, fabric or paper flowers, charms, die cuts, or memorabilia from the event you’re scrapping (ticket stubs, wristbands, a child’s note to Santa, etc.). When you’re comfortable with embellishments, you can consider using different techniques, such as distressing, rock-n-rolling, tearing, chalking, adding texture, or “popping up” elements of your LO.
Design and assembly - If coming up with a LO design is challenging for you, try following a layout sketch or “recipe.” Recipes are simply patterns that consider the focal point, balance, and unity. Remember the Rule of Threes: your eye is drawn to visual elements that have a triangular pattern – for instance, an embellishment that is at the bottom left and top right of one side of your LO and the bottom right of the other side.

Step 3: Supplies

It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the number of products on the market. In reality, you only need a few key supplies to get started:

A paper trimmer
Good, sharp tip scissors
Adhesive
An album
Black or colored acid free pen(s) for journaling

You can grow your supply stash as you go, but you should avoid some common pitfalls (I know this from experience and because I’m an impulse shopper):

Don’t buy a ton of paper because it’s pretty; have a specific LO in mind before you make that purchase. Remember that your photos are going to cover most of the paper, so that "pretty" design may not even be visible when you're done with your LO.
Do your research before making major purchases. Seriously. Do you know the difference between a Cricut, Cricut Expression, Cricut Create, and Gypsy? What about the different brands of die cutters? Post versus strap-hinge albums? Don't commit to a high-priced item until you’ve determined that it will fit your needs going forward.
Go to classes and crops to see what everyone else is using – try it first to see if you like it.

Step 4: Organize your photos

Drag out those boxes of photos and get organized! In just a few steps, you can have them at your fingertips.

First, decide if you want to organize your photos chronologically, by person, or by event. The easiest for me was chronologically. I put my pictures in piles by DECADE. Then I’d tackle that pile and organize by YEAR, then by QUARTER, then finally by DATE. I put the organized photos (neatly) in a shoebox with post-it notes to label each event, for example: Easter 3/08, Pacific Beach 6/08, Scout Camp 9/08, Thanksgiving 11/08 (and so on). It's annoying to finish a layout and then find the good pictures.

Step 5: Journaling

A picture is only worth a thousand words if you took it or you’re standing over someone’s shoulder explaining the story behind it. Your story is the most meaningful part of your LO, but unfortunately, journaling intimidates many scrappers. It doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece!

Handwriting vs. computer journaling? It's up to you! But consider this: if you inherited your great grandmother’s scrapbook, what would you want to know? Would it be more meaningful if it were in her own chicken-scratch handwriting, or would it be just as good if the notes were typed? If you feel stuck, try using journaling prompts, making lists, or just writing how you felt - just tell your story!

No matter what, ALWAYS date your pages! You can hide the date somewhere in the layout if you wish. If you lose your mind, at least you (and others) will know when the event occurred, and it makes it easier if you’re putting your pages in chronological order.
Step 6: Preserve

Make sure you use acid-free materials, designed to last for decades. Acid-containing materials will disintegrate your photos and the paper will “yellow” and fade over time. You can purchase an “archival spray mist” to help preserve memorabilia that is not acid-free.
NEVER allow drinks on your work area – liquid can easily destroy memorabilia, photos, and negatives. Always store your albums and supplies in a cool, dry place.
Computers crash and hard-drives fail. Make sure to back up your digital files to an on-line server or a flash drive or CD that can be stored someplace safe.
Sunlight and extreme temperatures will damage photos, paper, and albums – keep them out of direct sunlight and high humidity.
The oil from your skin will leave fingerprints on your photos, which will become visible over time. Use a soft cloth to wipe down your photos before placing your LO in a page protector. This will also help adhere the photos more securely to the page.

I was on a mission to see how many things I could make from January's featured workshop "Wings". The pictures aren't very clear, but you get the idea.

In addition to THREE DOUBLE scrapbook layouts...

... I made 10 regular cards, 6 mini (3x3) cards, 2 bookmarks, and an 8-pennant banner (not pictured). I still had a full sheet of paper left over, as well as some scraps and most of the embellishments that came with the kit.
